Creative potential in her new class!
In order to be a true artist, you must master the rules like an expert. (Pablo Picasso is said to have said it.)
Songwriting, like any other creative endeavor, has a set of rules that you can follow to make your songs up to the high standards that today's music fans have. Music is an art, yet our ears naturally like to hear or have been taught to appreciate certain aspects of it.
If you've ever written a song, you've probably already followed these guidelines. Rules, however, can and should be broken from time to time. Rule-breaking can lead to the most innovative and compelling songwriting when it is done with taste through ghost writing.
Let's take a look at some of the most prevalent rules songs follow, why they work, and what you might accomplish by deviating from the standard. I'll illustrate each "rule" with an example of an artist who defied the norm and made a work of art worth remembering.
